REFLECTION FOR THIS UNIT

  1.  Which TWO of the future ready skills did you BEST put to use over the course of the unit?

-Novel and Adaptive Thinking in that I have been able to adjust my thinking to see what is relevant to this particular topic and what would best represent it without much speculation or too much implicit depth.

– I know that one of the skills that maybe wasn’t executed to the best extent, but was utilized the most was the design mindset. In saying this I mean that I have tried to use previous tips that I have been told to use in previous years; CARP, Simple Design Technique, etc. – I tried to take them into consideration this time when I was brainstorming logo ideas.

1.a What links my final logo/concept with the UWC mission?

The idea of being connected and strengthening connections through the ‘digital age’ in a way. UWCs Mission is centered around being united which entails staying connected. TEchnology was used solely for connections as well as progressively making tedious chores more convenient. However, because we have been branching out into the limelight of Social Media, we have become carried away and sometimes we use Social Media as almost a  negative aspect of Technology, which strays away from Missions like UWCs, as well as straying away from the purpose of technology.

1.b Which ONE design choice does the most to reflect the UWC mission?

The choice to put the puppet in the phone, as it makes it more technology and connection based. It shows that, perhaps, we are being controlled (which takes away from our individuality, which is a key part of the UWC Mission), through means of the Digital Age.

  1. Did the final color selections reflect an understanding/interaction with this resource on color theory and this one?  How do you know?

We decided to keep the colours simple: Black and White – as our logo itself is quite busy and we did not want to take away from that, which in itself is advice that we took from the websites.

  1. Which logo trend/s are most obvious in your final design?

Definitely Negative Space, which we tried to use, again, so that we did not crowd the logo and make it too ‘loud’ and unclear.

3.b Of all our resource tools (see checklist), which were the most useful and which should you have investigated further?

Keynote Design Logo Tutorial, without a doubt, as it helped me construct my logo in the best way possible- I would not have knwon how to utilise Keynote to its best ability without that tutorial.

4 Which piece of peer feedback most resonated with you and why?

Ones from Sakurako and Aim as they gave us some tips that also pertained to Keynote, which was the source of our logo. They talked about other more useful tools that we could use that we had not already, which actually ended up really ameliorating our logo.

4.b Whose logo most inspired you and why?

Tomoko, Mallika and Anushkas as theirs is extremely well thought out, and sends the message across very quickly. They have taken everything into consideration to the maximum extent, and it really shows in their logo.

  1. Which tool (keynote/pages/adobe/Wordpress) do you feel will be the most useful to you in the future? Why?

I feel as though Adobe would have been a good tool, perhaps with a more simple design, however to stay efficient whilst still putting effort in, Keynote was most useful for our logo in particular as we were able to be productive with how we managed our time, as for me it was easier to navigate through Keynote.

  1. Would you say your collaborative style has remained the same across the unit, or has fluctuated? (based on this resource used earlier) What evidence makes you think so?

I think it has, and I think that is because I tried consciously to keep it that way as I was scared that it would fluctuate and my partner and I would not have the same dynamic which is what collaboration entails, essentially.

  1. Where have you seen the most personal growth happen for you in this unit in regards to our ATLs? How did you achieve that growth?

I felt that my growth lies in communication, my partner and I communicated a lot more than I have in other courses and I guess that working together toward achieving a good logo is good and helps us both progressively grow as learners.

  1. Lastly, returning all the way to the start when we watched this talk together: in terms of the ways that you have interacted with classmates in this unit, are you a giver or a taker? What makes you say so?

Social Media

One common example of this could include the LaGrand Case which was a prominent political issue that got mildly disregarded by Social Media, causing mass bias to be placed on this piece of news.

This topic definitely links to any sort of Humanity subject or English; it involves key research skills. IN this, we mean that being made aware of this topic will then help them develop their research skills where they will be able to pick and choose appropriate articles that will directly explain the issue at hand without forming any bias within the article or in the readers head.

Manipulation In Social Media

  1. Your concept/theme/topic/prompt explained in 20 words or less:

Discussing the portrayal and manipulation of pressing issues in social media.

E.g. The Legrand case, which was manipulated to form bias

  1. How will this reflect the UWC mission

By having a Digital Dragons day in the first place we are forming a sense of community by having so many students comment of the same situation. This can start conversations within the school uniting the student body. Although there can be a difference of opinion between students, it starts a conversation which can lead to students being exposed to different perspectives

  1. How can you adapt the concept to be applicable to primary, middle, and high school students?

The concept can be adapted in the sense that when a child regardless of age is reading a news article, they need to be able to identify the difference between what is real and what has been adjusted or twisted to fit a certain generalisation or bias.

  1. What hashtag would you use to promote the day on social media? (is this hashtag already used?)

#biasvirus

#beawareandtakecare

#manipulationnation

  1. What three links/resources would you provide to help inform people before they begin to think about your concept?

  2. http://www.globalissues.org/article/532/media-manipulation
  3. https://conversionxl.com/online-manipulation-all-the-ways-youre-currently-being-deceived/

  1. What about your concept is unique/important/relevant to our school community?

As previously mentioned, in school, research is a prevalent skill that gets developed and used very often. If you are not able to identify loopholes and bias, you will not be able to fulfill the development of this skill to the full extent and apply it in everyday life as their needs to be a differentiation between what is true and what has been edited to give one side more leeway.

How else would you feel that this could be implemented in a school environment?

Screencast Link (JAYZ)  / Screencast Link (DDD): Over the last two lessons, I have learnt that time management is definitely an aspect of my learning that I need to improve. I have realised how essential it is for the DPers course and I realise that in order to fulfil the tasks in this course, time management is key.

The Topic we would like to focus on is ‘The portrayal of pressing issues in Social Media.’ We felt that this should be discussed and openly spoken about as many prevalent issues that do take a toll on the economies and societies either get discarded or manipulated when portrayed in social media. This diminishes the magnitude of them which then corrupts the minds of the reader as it gives them a different, somewhat wrong insight into the issue.
